I want viewers to feel the music before they ever heard it. Beyond the immediate joy, the importance of seeing ourselves represented. For many Black families, JET magazines provided images of people who looked like us being talented, successful, fashionable, powerful, and free.
I chose a mixed-media approach because I wanted the work to have the same layering and visual excitement as the culture it represents. Painting allows me to develop the emotion and humanity of the figure, while the patterned fabric introduces actual texture, movement, and personality into the clothing.
The vintage-inspired clothing and hat add another layer of personality and challenge narrow ideas about what Black cultural expression is supposed to look like. I wanted to capture a feeling—a moment when Black joy became its own form of history.
